World In Crisis: Progress Report and Prognosis

December 16, 2024 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The world approaches the final year of the 21st century’s first quarter, with parts of the planet in flames, rising
tensions in certain regions, and some unsettled disputes on the verge of open conflict. At the same time, postcovid
economic recovery is slow or remains suspended, compounding a general pessimism.

From the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to economic stasis in Europe to tensions between Israel and Iran, and
between the US and China in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, few regions are spared serious
challenges. Meanwhile, a new US government in the new year signifying change may impact significantly on key
issues, including US-China rivalry.

At the same time, the Global South sees the promise of rejuvenation through building solidarity behind such
institutions as BRICS and its signature campaigns. Following independence, sovereign nations in the developing
world are asserting their legitimate rights through the collective agency of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South
Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and their partner countries.

Seemingly distant developments can have some common roots or factors. To understand the nature of a crisis or
opportunity, and to know how best to approach each, it is important first to acknowledge its implications and the
stakes, and to identify the stakeholders behind the scenes often obscured by shadowy vested interests.
